Some of the problems of Coruña society are aging and, as in most modern societies, loss of contact with the productive world.
One possible solution would be to create a semi-self-sufficient 'micro city' formed by floating modules that would appeal to people interested in a new self-sufficient way to live and in community with the aquatic world, with the possibility of moving the housing to places where there is employment. This micro city would be based on the cultivation of microalgae, which would serve as a means for obtaining biofuel for the living quarters, animal food for fish, crustaceans and molluscs and fertilizer for gardens. In addition, each kg of microalgae would absorb 1.8 kg of CO2. There may be small microalgae gardens for cultivation and consumption by the citizens of La Coruña, as a way of linking production and consumption, which are currently disconnected, and thus become a point of agritourism.
Besides the cultivation of microalgae, there would be shellfish cultivation (characterized by the consumption of microalgae) and native fish, focusing on gilt-head bream and sargus, since they feed on algae. The harbor, with the disappearance of ships, would become an ideal habitat for these marine species.
In addition, some of the floating modules could be specially designed for research and could move to different places of the waters of Coruña for a deeper and more detailed investigation of the marine environment.
The micro city could self-supply through aquaculture and creating gardens that would be nourished by the fertilizer produced by microalgae.
There would be created a series of floating platforms with microalgae resources, deposits with refined fuel and orchards to supply the floating capsules.
A city made up of three types of elements would be created: Housing coupling structures (which may be placed on the land or the sea), floating modules (which will be supplied by the islands of resources) and big scale maritime housing.
All types of housing will be a habitable hybrid yet productive, depending on your situation, you will be supplied by different resources.
Three ways of nomadic life will arise: one more fixed, coupled to the structure, but that at any moment can become any of the other two. Another more mobile one, water-based and in continuous movement surrounding the port area. And a third one, large-scale transport, which would bring the modules to any port city in the world and perform the other two lifestyles.
The city is presented as a living organism which will grow and be transformed over time from being a concrete surface with some empty metallic structures, to be a growing field with many homes and life.
Being thought of as something that is constantly changing, the method of construction shall be simple and fast, based on scaffolding structures to which housing capsules are inserted.
The buildings will vary depending on the program and content of the area in which they are edified.
These programs will define the lifestyle of their inhabitants. The main modes of life will be:
- Sea Life
- Agricultural Life
- Playful Life
- Nomadic Life
They may be combined to form hybrid buildings.
